I’ve been a lazy gardener!!

After a long winter and not venturing into the garden very much, I have found it hard this year to get myself motivated again.  Does that sound familiar?

But once the sun came out and Mark mowed the lawn, I could smell spring in the air and I got up from my comfy chair and look at the ‘Marshall’s catalogue’ for inspiration.

With the raised beds weeded and the sun shining into my mini greenhouses warming them up, I decided to ‘get cracking’ again.

I’ve decided this year to have colour and to grow what I like to eat.  It’s ok having 10 tons of courgettes if you intend to eat 10 tons, but I don’t.  After one or two, I’ve had enough of them.

So this year I am growing more chillies, sugar snap peas, dwarf beans and lots and lots of different salads.

Asparagus is another plan to try and I’ll get back to you on that one in a few days.  I’m wondering if I have already made a mistake there – but time will tell.

So, I hope you will come on my journey with me this year, it was lovely to have so many of you making comments last year.  My Brother Simon, I’m sure will be making me laugh along the way.

Happy gardening.

  1. Hi Anne, I was worried you weren’t coming back! I’ve been periodically checking your blog to see if was a post, so I’m so glad you are.

Feeling very achy tonight as I spent yesterday pruning and clearing in the back garden and today up at the allotment.

Last year I’d discovered a whole load of raspberries hiding in the excessively weedy section by the shed. So with my trusty fork and spade, I’ve been gradually clearing and weeding. Horrible big clumps of nettles and couch grass with the odd giant hogweed to round things up. So it’s been hard going, taking up a few Sundays. It’s now beginning to look a bit like a raspberry bed, I do so love raspberries!

I put a selection of onions and shallots in last October and they’re finally putting on a bit more growth now. The potatoes are chitting away (in the bathroom), so I will have to dig the bed for them soon. I sprayed the remaining un-dug area with Round Up a couple of weeks ago and the weeds are beginning to go yellow. So yet more digging to do.

I’ve vowed to do better this year. We’ll have to see.

    Best wishes, Kate

    • Oh Kate, thank you so much for your patience!

You sound like you’ve been really busy, well done. That has spurred me on to do more. I have some raspberries in and need to put in a fence for them to be tied to. Another job to do!

I wasn’t sure about doing potatoes again, they were disappointing last year, but let me know how you get on, I could give them another go. I too am determined to do better this year.
Take care and thank you so much for your message.

      Anne. x
